In our quest for personal growth and excellence, we often overlook a fundamental yet powerful tool at our disposal—reading. As the first habit in our transformative series, “12 Habits That Changed My Life - And Will Change Yours Too,” I want to delve into the profound impact that cultivating a reading habit has had on my life and how it can do the same for you.
How Books Changed My Life
Ever since I can remember, I was drawn to books. Initially, it was the beautiful pictures that caught my eye, but I quickly became immersed in the stories contained within their pages. Starting with fables and folk tales from my country, moving to tales from neighboring lands, then to mythology worldwide, and onto fantasy books like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, I traveled not only across the entire planet Earth but through space, time, and the laws of physics—long before I had set a foot outside my home country, Latvia. You could often find me opting to read at home instead of going to play at the beach or with my friends during the summer break. I loved reading so much because, with each book, my knowledge expanded, my imagination grew richer, my ability to relate to and understand others improved, and, without my knowing, my very own identity was being shaped. Each book that I read taught me a core message, messages that form the foundations of my value system, are a source of my self-belief, and shape my outlook on life. It’s the books that I’ve read to which I credit the roots of my personality and character today.
Why Reading?
Reading isn’t just about absorbing words on a page; it’s about opening doors to new worlds, ideas, and perspectives. It challenges our thinking, fuels our creativity, and fosters empathy. More than that, reading is a cornerstone habit that can catalyze growth in all aspects of life.
How Reading Transforms Us
• Expands Knowledge: Each book you read adds to your mental library, equipping you with diverse insights and information.
• Improves Focus and Concentration: In our digital age, where distractions are a constant, reading helps train your mind to focus deeply.
• Enhances Emotional Intelligence: Through stories and narratives, we live thousands of lives, gaining insights into human psychology and emotions.
Building Your Reading Habit
1. Set Realistic Goals: Start with a goal that feels achievable—whether it’s a book a month or 10 pages a day.
2. Make It a Routine: Carve out a specific time each day for reading. Morning, lunchtime, or bedtime—find what works for you.
3. Create a Reading Environment: Have a dedicated, comfortable spot for reading, free from distractions.
4. Choose Books That Interest You: Your reading habit will stick if you’re genuinely interested in the material. Don’t hesitate to drop a book that doesn’t engage you.
